Octoberfist

This drawing was done by Phil Rynda based on a joke board panel I made that ended up in the title sequence for the show. Even though he doesn't use this energy sword or ride a unicorn in the show proper, I felt like it'd be a mistake not to include the image somewhere since I think we can all agree that this is The American Dream in cartoon form.

Hold this image in your mind when you go to the polls next month.

Here's an update:

Steve Fritz from Newsarama.com has posted an interview with me about Underfist. You can find it here:

http://www.newsarama.com/tv/100809-Ani-Shorts-Underfist.html

There's also a "review" up at Toonzone. It's a negative review (they always are at Toonzone), but the reason I'd suggest that you skip it is because it literally spoils two or three of Underfist's surprises in the first fewparagraphs. Read it on Monday if you must.

Ha ha! If this turns out to be something that will come back to haunt Hoss in the future (let's face it -- we all have skeletons in the closet), he can always blame it on the love that was not meant to be.

Eris.

We've all seen what loving her does to him. :)

I'd buy that as a poster. And take it to college next year.

While some chicks would have Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and/or Robert Downey Jr. duct taped over their tiny, college dorm room walls, I'd have Hoss Delgado riding a unicorn. That sounds so much more awesome.

I don't like the ad either, but only because I don't like the narrator's voice and I can't tell what he's saying. "Candy coated snuhhh.." or something.

Well, we can't win 'em all. Drink a lot of bourbon first. If you hate it I hope you get your money back.

I’m really looking forward to watching “Underfist” tonight; I’m sure that it will be great, as you have provided me with countless hours of entertainment and I really appreciate all that you have done for animation fans such as myself. I sincerely hope that you get another great project started up before too long and I’ll be sure to check your Blog routinely.

Wow, I'm watching Underfist this second, and I'm amazed. It's probably the most funny, best show/movie thing ever. I can't believe it's this great. I love it. I sent an email to Cartoon Network saying I want a series out of this! I love this pic by the way. It's my new cell phone background! :D

T_T

And thus I have another reason to hate Cartoon Network.

Barely advertising a spin off of one of their funniest shows.

Half of the god damned mother ($%^ing show I missed.

Was the CEO of Cartoon network replaced with a mentally disabled worn out shoe after the whole Mooninite Bomb Scare thing? Because advertising live action stuff more than cartoons on the god damned Cartoon Network seems like something a mentally disabled shoe would do.

Also the half I saw was funny. It made no sense but it gave me the giggles. xD

Mr. Atoms, Underfist was EPIC WIN. Great work on it! I really liked all the action sequences and I dig the changes in character design for Skarr and Hoss. Oh, and I think most of the commercials for shows on CN are hard to understand nowadays. I can never understand the announcer.

I just watched "Underfist" and I have to say that it was even better than I had expected. You and your colleagues have really outdone yourselves and I sincerely hope that more of these specials will be ordered in the future. I encourage everybody to write to Cartoon Network and let them know how much you've loved "Underfist", but if you can't write a letter, at least go to their feedback form (the following URL) and let them know through that.

You deserve the best, Mr. Atoms. I hope that all goes well for you in the future.

aaaahhhh!!!! i just watched underfist!!!

first of all, loved it! it fulfilled my B and M need, while at the same time made me feel like i was watching a brand new show!!! (which indeed i was) it was excellent that mandy was the president. that's like every mandy fan's dream.

second of all, the ending song was so awesome, and it made me feel extremely happy. i am desperately hoping it'll work out as a series and if it doesn't i swear i'm gonna destroy my tv.

also, i got rob sorcher's address from thurop van orman's Deviant art blog, and i'm thinking about writing him a letter about keeping underfist around. would this help at all?

p.s. my friend alexa says that that show was so awesome, that she wants to fly over to wherever you are, tackle you, and marry you. but she won't because she already has plans to marry mandy.

Having just watched Underfist, I had to run over to your blog to comment. I absolutely loved it, Maxwell! I thank you, good sir, for creating a movie which I may ad to my list of 'favorite Halloween specials'. :) (Oh--and loved the brief Nergal family cameo. :3 I was happy to see them.)

Well, this is my first time commenting on your blog (been reading for a while though) and I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed Underfist.

Not to get all fan girly or anything, but I'm an aspiring animator and you've been one of my biggest inspirations. From my side, "children's" animation is in danger of going in a bad direction. But it's shows like Billy and Mandy, Chowder, Flapjack, Foster's, ect, that show that animation can be made to be enjoyed by children and adults and doesn't have to be completely infantile.

So yeah, thanks for being awesome. I hope you have success in all your future endevours.

Oh, and as for that review that said you had to be like, 7 or something to enjoy Underfirst, I'm a 17 year old girl, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I saw Underfist and let me just say, it was one of the best animated specials I've ever seen. You and your team did an amazing job.

Forget that TZ review. This special was made of pure awesome.

Thank you for creating this. I and many others are hoping this either becomes a series or there's going to be a sequel.

Thanks again.

De-lurking to say~ Loved it! I dearly hope this will be a series, or, like, a movie series. I want to see Underfist fight space vampires. (weird- earlier today I drew a Battlestar Galactica Halloween picture and Lt. Gaeta was a vampire. SPACE VAMPIRE I scribbled under him. I giggled at my cleverness.)

And I'm going to pretty much abandon my college work (take THAT, Ancient Literature!!) to make Underfist dolls.

Caught it and loved it, then headed over to find your blog and learn about the production. Here's hoping CN picks up more of your work, you and CH do some of the most fun stuff on TV.

If I had to pick one moment, I'd say that I loved the bunny's "what did I ever do to you?" just after ranting about how much he'd ruined everyone's lives. The characterization of Mindy was also interestingly divergent from what we'd seen from her in B&M, seeming to me to be perhaps a bit more sympathetic.

I've just finished watching THE UNDERFIST twice now, and i have to say...i was NOT DISAPPPOINTED AT ALL! I'm going to definitley watch it AGAIN after I type this!

Even after it was over, when i went online to write a journal entry about it (a "review" of sorts) there were comments coming from everybody all over the place!

POSITIVE FEEDBACK! <3

people really LOVED it!

I swear, I haven't laughed this hard in the longest time! I'm still so HYPER from all the EXCITEMENT!

The whole thing was GORGEOUS! the ANIMATION was a feast for the eyes, a sigh to see! GREAT HUMOR and ACTION SCENES!

i never did catch a glimpse of the "scarecrow" JACK, though.

(would you mind giving your fans a bit of info on that?)

All in all, i must congratulate you on a JOB WELL DONE! this will be one of the happiest nights i've spent with my siblings. I've never seen them so HAPPY!

I really hope this will become a series! Seeing the credits left me wanting MORE!

THANKYOU for being a crazy GENIUS.

It was a DELIGHTFUL TREAT! <3

Happy (early) Halloween!

Hey Maxwell,
I really think that you did a fantastic job with Underfist. You definitely set up a winning combination by having Hoss, Irwin, Jeff, Skarr and Fred together as a team of heroic proportions! The artwork and story were top notch in my opinion. I wouldn't let the review by ToonZone discourage you too much. It's obvious that the reviewer wouldn't know talent if it bit him in the butt! Anyway, I absolutely enjoyed Underfist and am hoping that we the fans can persuade the powers that be at Cartoon Network to make Underfist a series. That would be awesome!!

Holy crap Maxwell, Underfist was very enjoyable and entertaining. It's going to stay in my TiVo forever. The only part I didn't like as much are the ending credits (the second, actual one) because those titles shown could have been and/or should be upcoming Underfist titles. Like those space vampires? If CN doesn't pick up Underfist for a regular show I would say that they're heading in a bad direction with their new 'reinvention'.

Hey Maxwell,

Excuse this post for the topic-jumping that's bound to ensue, but I've got a question!

Basically, I guess what I'm asking is: How does one go about getting one's foot in the door at a company like CN? I have a show concept and bible and pitch materials like thousands of other sobs, but man, it seems like vying for the attention of royalty.

Is there any wisdom you might impart, no matter how broad-brush, on getting a dream series noticed?

OK, first things first:

I really, REALLY dug it! (So much that I'mna watch it again in a bit.) Since you pointed out that the drawing made it into the credits, I kept my eyes peeled. You did not disappoint. :D I hope that CN allows you to do the others (as mentioned in the ending tag). I've always known there was something evil about marshmellow bunnies -- those sugary peeps may outlive the coachroach in a nuclear meltdown.

Now for the bad:

It's not so much on you, but on CN itself. During the marathon yesterday -- and even before in recent showings of yours & others' work -- they either simply cut off the end credits (to show those horrible "Wedgies") or they relegate them to half-screened mush to further the advertising of other things. I mean, the best part of "Guess What's Coming to Dinner" is the end during the credits where Hoss wakes up in the dumpster as a puppet. Beyond that, you & so many others work hard on your stuff & you should get the screentime credit you deserve. (A great example of this is C.H.'s puppet endings on Chowder, which have only recently begun to be aired.)

OK, sorry for the long post, but I wanted to get this out there. CN needs to stop cheapening its shows & the talented people behind them.

Hi,

I saw Underfist yesterday and it was fantastic.

Anyway, I had a question for you: Is Fred supposed to look younger?

Did you change his appearance on purpose?

Blogger Bushido Hacks said...

I read in a previous blog that you stated that Cartoon Network's landscape is changing some for the better other for the worse and that it would be a different place without you.
On the other hand, have you thought of getting into online animation (i.e. Homestar Runner, Newgrounds.com)?
I know it would require some capital and an even greater amount of creativity (since CN would probably frown upon using the characters from B&M, a whole new set of characters would need to be created).

I understand that you may have though about it and have declined on such plans.

On the other hand, its great that you continue to animate and create a new cartoon once in a while.
