Trick-or-Treating in August

I do apologize for the seemingly needless drama of posting a big picture and not explaining anything. But to be fair, I was also being lazy. I figured that if I started talking about Comicon I wouldn't be able to stop, and since so much happened I'd be writing all day instead of doing what I was supposed to be doing... which is working on Underfist.

So all of my Comicon reviews and thank-yous will have to wait a few more days. For the moment, just kick back, relax, and let Underfist knock some sense into you!

The Underfist Halloween Bash!

I pitched Underfist just for a laugh about a year ago. It probably wouldn't have even made it to Atlanta if C.H. Greenblatt and Jay Bastian hadn't also been so excited about it. So I sent off a few drawings (inclusing the group shot in the previous post and the drawing of Skarr below) and the next thing I knew I had a Halloween Special for 2008.

Yeah, let's get that out of the way up-front. It's still over a year away.

"My sugar-free double-shot half-caff mocha!"

Per the bible, Underfist is the continuing story off Hoss Delgado, Skarr, Irwin, Jeff the Spider, and Fred Fredburger, and their battle against evil monsters from the Underworld. Sort of like adysfunctional half-monster "A-Team". The action takes place (strangely enough) in the near-future of next Halloween. Hoss has obviously been through some rough times since we saw him last, and Skarr has augmented his love of growing plants with a new love of growing facial hair.

I'm really happy with the way the storyboards are turning out. It's still got a "Billy & Mandy" feel, but it's really all about epic slapstick battles and fnding out more about some of the favorite secondary characters. If you thought Hoss was just a generic beat-em-up lunkhead or that Fred Fredburger had nothing more to offer than running off to go poo-poo, you're in for a pleasant surprise.

Billy, Mandy, and Grim do make a few brief appearances, but Underfist is truly a spinoff and truly its own show. It's still too far out to be giving away the story, but I'll try to leak something every once in a while. And not the stuff I usually leak. You wouldn't want that. Trust me.

In the mean time... "May the Fist be with you..."

Awesome.

I've always thought that those secondary characters would do well in a spinoff. We'll see if an extra dimension makes or breaks them ;)

How long with this be? 20 minutes like Jacked Up Halloween? 30 minutes like the christmas special? 40 minutes like Wrath of The Spider Queen? Or 80 minutes like Big Boogey Adventure?

Man, I'm thrilled we're going to be seeing more of the Billy and Mandy universe and this special looks to be another winner.

Keep the goodness coming, Maxwell! Wherever you take these characters I'll be sure to follow.

Are we going to be seeing more of Dracula any time soon, btw?

I must say, I'm really excited about this! Those are a great handfull of characters you've come up with for the spin off. And the name is so action-packed (Underfist. I keep wanting to say Unterfist as my 6 years of German would encourage).

Anywho, I look forward to hearing more about this in the future.

I nearly jumped out of my front row seat when Underfist was announced during the panel.
After I just got done bugging you about Skarr the other day.
Sly Devil, is that why you asked me if I was going to the panel?
All I can say again and again is Thank you. Thankyou.

Aww. I wanted an 80 minute movie. Oh well. Let's hope it's as entertaining as Big Boogie Adventure, and not a letdown like Wrath of the Spider Queen.

Hi Maxwell! It's the kid who made guesses about Invaded again. This time I'm making a guess about your pilot. Is it based on Asterix The Gaul? I'm thinking yes because Cartoon Network appears to be making a couple of references to Asterix. For example, in Squirrel Boy, Rodney and Andy protect a drink that empowers them against
Salty Mike and his owner. Another example is Billy and Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure, in which at the very end of the credits, Dracula is playing golf with Grim's scythe , dressed up as Cacofonix The Bard. Could Cartoon Network be making an Asterix series?

That's a hilarious concept. It's such a weird, unexpected team, and I love it! Seems like something non-canon almost, but whatever, I'm excited! Can't wait for more!

@ Anonymous #1:
It's just a special. If you like it and Cartoon Network likes it perhaps it'll be something more, but for now it's just a special.

@ Anonymous #2:
Actually, at the end of "Big Boogey", Dracula is just dressed as Dracula. Only he's wearing golf pants. If I'm part of a larger conspiracy to assault the world with an Asterix cartoon... that would certainly be weird.

@ All You Other Guys:
Just because Dracula's not a card-carrying, uniform-wearing member of Underfist doesn't mean he's not in the special. In one of the remaining unaired episodes of "Billy and Mandy" we learn something important about Dracula that relates directly to Underfist.

@ Taco Wiz:
Billy and Mandy has never had any real continuity, what with the characters reverse-aging out of existence, the universe collapsing, the planet being conquered by spiders, and the like. That's why I'm always sort of baffled that people expected a hard ending for Billy and Mandy.

In the past I planned out a few changes to Billy and Mandy's world that did stick. The first, I think, was the birth of Nergal Junior and Nergal's marriage to Aunt Sis. A few other things have stuck over the years, and one element of Spider Queen remains true for Underfist. Billy and Jeff's relationship has changed. Sort of. But otherwise you can treat Spider Queen like any other episode (though, if it ever comes up, I will treat that as Grim's official "How I Became the Reaper" story)

Maybe if the special gets high ratings, we'll see an Underfist Spin Off. What? A nerd who spends his whole life watching stupid cartoons can dream, can't he?

I think I just crapped my pants. Irwin, Fred, Hoss, Jeff, and Skarr all at the same time? YES!

"It's just a special. If you like it and Cartoon Network likes it perhaps it'll be something more, but for now it's just a special."

I'm all for more B&M universe, even if it does not directly star Billy and Mandy. Here's hoping it is well-recieved. I'm sure I'll love it.

Maybe I'll throw this Underfist thing some sort of illegal party at my house. Strippers, loud music, drunken freshmen, you name it...

This is going to be awesome. Billy and Mandy was one of my Fave cartoon network shows. The other being Courage the Cowardly dog. My fave character from Billy & Mandy though was Jack O' Lantern. But I guess it's no surprise we won't be seeing him again. Or will we? hmm... Underfist is a halloween special... Anyway I can't wait for this, it's good to see that Billy & Mandy has in some way survived.

I didn't think Underfist was as good as Billy & Mandy. I thought it would show more about Billy & Mandy, but I guess I was wrong. I don't think think this would make a very good show if it wasn't about Billy & Mandy & Grim. I just like Billy & Mandy & Grim.

And I agree with the guy that said Fred Fredburger is better in smaller doses.

There's 2 things I didn't get about this movie when I saw it:

1. Why does Hosdelgotto say he's 48 but in the Billy & Mandy show he says he's 33?

2. Why does Skar have a mustache?

I watched the special,I don't agree with the guy who said Pudd'n would do good.He probably wets the bed more than Irwin.HE only deserved to fall out of Mindy's hair. Why did Scar say idiot Canadian,is he Canadian? In the end Mandy gave Dracula some payback. In the end she gave Dracula a penny like he did in the start.GET OFF MY PORCH YOU LITTLE WEIRDO! SHOO! SHOO!I might like the Underfist theme better than Scary-o.I hope you make a series of Underfist!
